If you plan to take your ECU out of the car every time you park it, it would be handy if it didn't have all those knobs and bits and bobs jamming out all over the place, so cut those off :D
but, you will find, when carrying around a CD-ROM sized metal box people will ask you awkward questions and come to the conclusion you're an obsessive and give you a look that says "yeah, he probably does inappropriate things to his car when the garage door is down", so, what better way to cover up a CD-ROM sized metal box than with an old school CD-ROM carrying case
"hey buddy, nice CD-ROM!"
Onto the other minor project of the weekend, my variable "shift" light had become a "you are turning right" light due to my shoddy soldering skills causing a short each time I turned right. Cold connections and no shrink wrap!? I knew better than this the few short years ago I installed it! Hell, Clarkson would have done better with his hammer wielding fists of ham.
So I redid the wiring on the potentiometre, good connections AND shrink wrapping, the way it should have been the first time.
And that is all... also, its Christmas Eve's eve, and there ain't no one in the office, commence thumb twiddling.

Ok, why would you want to take the ECU out of your car each time you park it?

Damn where do you live that compels you to yank your ECU out? Reminds me of the old Saab 900 classics where you could remove your Clarion stereo...if it aint there, noone can steal it!

because it gets lonely when I leave it in the car!

Dawww! Poor guy. Couldn't you get it a friend?

I had a sweet removable stereo back in the day, always felt like a shame that you couldn't use it out of the car with headphones or something :P

a good idea! a second ECU! hmm... better make sure they are the same sex, I have no need for a brood of little ECUs yapping about

lol haha yeah no doubt

Maybe someday they'll come up with the CPU with the removable faceplate to make it easier.
That'd be so choice.

I thought if they were the same sex they'd eat each others fins?

lol haha nice. Or a code to enter after you replace the battery

Aren't you worried you're going to stress the connector(s)? They're pretty sturdy and usually with the zero insertion force type deal. But still... they can't have been designed to undergo all those cycles. There's gotta a be better solution.

mine connectors are now non-standard also, a: because I too feared the repetitive stress on connectors not designed for such, and b: because the wiring is now shuffled about so that only this ECU will work, instead of just any ECU from the same model.

ooh - smart man. (although this ECU removal business is still odd behavior - how many people do this?).
What connectors did you use?

it's something in the vein of the "milspec" connectors that are so popular

ah, thanks - didn't realize that were 'popular'

there's a few thread on various forums, where these are essentially the latest in bling.
one close to my heart is on Honda-Tech, but the VW folks are really the leaders in this wire hiding business that has made these single connectors "popular"

wow - those guys are nuts! Having said that, I wouldn't mind using some of their ideas and techniques to try to emulate (a small bit!) of their look.
Thanks for teaching me about yet another sub-culture
There really is something for everyone. Yes, I will make fun of them for having too much time on their hands but their dedication and results is impressive. Besides we all have our own fetishes.
